The Four Cosmic Levels

The approach that will be taken in this exploration to comprehending “the path to fusion” with the indwelling Thought Adjuster begins with identifying the four cosmic levels in human experience:

5:3.8 The worship experience consists in the sublime attempt of the betrothed Adjuster to communicate to the divine Father the inexpressible longings and the unutterable aspirations of the human soul —the conjoint creation of the God-seeking mortal mind and the God-revealing immortal Adjuster. Worship is, therefore, the act of the material mind’s assenting to the attempt of its spiritualizing self, under the guidance of the associated spirit, to communicate with God as a faith son of the Universal Father. The mortal mind consents to worship; the immortal soul craves and initiates worship; the divine Adjuster presence conducts such worship in behalf of the mortal mind and the evolving immortal soul. True worship, in the last analysis, becomes an experience realized on four cosmic levels: the intellectual, the morontial, the spiritual, and the personal—the consciousness of mind, soul, and spirit, and their unification in personality.

The four cosmic levels identified in the above passage from The Urantia Book, Paper 5 – God’s Relation to the Individual, 3. True Worship, are as follows:

  1. The intellectual,

  2. The morontial,

  3. The spiritual, and their unification in

  4. The personal.

The personal—the personality—is identified as the unifier of mind, soul and spirit. The personality is not only identified here as a cosmic level, it is also identified in Paper 112 – Personality Survival, as having three dimensions of expansion and self-realization on the mortal level and four on the super finite levels, for a totality of seven dimensions. And there is much more to comprehend from the above passage and the dimensions of personality. We’ll return to these concepts later on.

In Section 5., The Consciousness of God, we are given additional descriptions:

  1. The intellectual—Intellectually he acquires the satisfactions of a more unified human consciousness.

  2. The morontial—Philosophically he enjoys the substantiation of his ideals of moral values.

  3. The spiritual—Spiritually he thrives in the experience of divine companionship, in the spiritual satisfactions of true worship.

5:5.11 God-consciousness, as it is experienced by an evolving mortal of the realms, must consist of three varying factors, three differential levels of reality realization. There is first the mind consciousness—the comprehension of the idea of God. Then follows the soul consciousness—the realization of the ideal of God. Last, dawns the spirit consciousness—the realization of the spirit reality of God. By the unification of these factors of the divine realization, no matter how incomplete, the mortal personality at all times overspreads all conscious levels with a realization of the personality of God.

From this passage we may extract the fuller meaning of the cosmic levels described as:

  • Three differential levels of reality realization and their unification in the fourth.

  1. The intellectual (Self-correction)—Intellectually he acquires the satisfactions of a more unified human consciousness. There is first the mind consciousness—the comprehension of the idea of God. The mathematical or logical recognition of the uniformity of physical causation.

  2. The morontial (Self-direction)—Philosophically he enjoys the substantiation of his ideals of moral values. Then follows the soul consciousness—the realization of the ideal of God. The reasoned recognition of the obligation of moral conduct.

  3. The spiritual (Self-control)—Spiritually he thrives in the experience of divine companionship, in the spiritual satisfactions of true worship. Last, dawns the spirit consciousness—the realization of the spirit reality of God. The faith-grasp of the fellowship worship of Deity, associated with the loving service of humanity.

  4. The personal (Self-mastery)—At-onement the consciousness of mind, soul, and spirit, and their unification in personality. By the unification of these factors of the divine realization, no matter how incomplete, the mortal personality at all times overspreads all conscious levels with a realization of the personality of God.

What may not be so obvious in this exploratory discussion is that each of these four cosmic levels are…levels of cosmic awareness–cosmic consciousness.

  • But what does cosmic awareness–cosmic consciousness actually mean?
