Body, Mind and Spirit:
Introduction to the Twenty-eight Principles
“The fact that we imagine ourselves to be right and everybody else wrong is the greatest of all obstacles in the path towards unity, and unity is necessary if we would reach truth, for truth is one.” –`Abdu’l-Bahá
What are the Twenty-eight Principles?
I want to introduce to the twenty-eight principles, which I embraced at age twenty-one and which have been the guiding “points of light” in my human experiential unfolding, ever since. But I am going to introduce you to them, as I view them, now, in groups of four, explaining why I group them this way.
– the adjutant mind spirit of intuition, the experience-level realm of the 7th psychic circle
(556.3) 48:7.3 1. A display of specialized skill does not signify possession of spiritual capacity. Cleverness is not a substitute for true character.
(556.4) 48:7.4 2. Few persons live up to the faith which they really have. Unreasoned fear is a master intellectual fraud practiced upon the evolving mortal soul.
(556.5) 48:7.5 3. Inherent capacities cannot be exceeded; a pint can never hold a quart. The spirit concept cannot be mechanically forced into the material memory mold.
(556.6) 48:7.6 4. Few mortals ever dare to draw anything like the sum of personality credits established by the combined ministries of nature and grace. The majority of impoverished souls are truly rich, but they refuse to believe it.
– the adjutant mind spirit of understanding, the experience-level realm of the 6th psychic circle
(556.7) 48:7.7 5. Difficulties may challenge mediocrity and defeat the fearful, but they only stimulate the true children of the Most Highs.
(556.8) 48:7.8 6. To enjoy privilege without abuse, to have liberty without license, to possess power and steadfastly refuse to use it for self-aggrandizement — these are the marks of high civilization.
(556.9) 48:7.9 7. Blind and unforeseen accidents do not occur in the cosmos. Neither do the celestial beings assist the lower being who refuses to act upon his light of truth.
(556.10) 48:7.10 8. Effort does not always produce joy, but there is no happiness without intelligent effort.
– the adjutant mind spirit of courage, the experience-level realm of the 5th psychic circle
(556.11) 48:7.11 9. Action achieves strength; moderation eventuates in charm.
(556.12) 48:7.12 10. Righteousness strikes the harmony chords of truth, and the melody vibrates throughout the cosmos, even to the recognition of the Infinite.
(556.13) 48:7.13 11. The weak indulge in resolutions, but the strong act. Life is but a day’s work — do it well. The act is ours; the consequences God’s.
(556.14) 48:7.14 12. The greatest affliction of the cosmos is never to have been afflicted. Mortals only learn wisdom by experiencing tribulation.
– the adjutant mind spirit of knowledge, the experience-level realm of the 4th psychic circle
(556.15) 48:7.15 13. Stars are best discerned from the lonely isolation of experiential depths, not from the illuminated and ecstatic mountain tops.
(556.16) 48:7.16 14. Whet the appetites of your associates for truth; give advice only when it is asked for.
(557.1) 48:7.17 15. Affectation is the ridiculous effort of the ignorant to appear wise, the attempt of the barren soul to appear rich.
(557.2) 48:7.18 16. You cannot perceive spiritual truth until you feelingly experience it, and many truths are not really felt except in adversity.
– the adjutant mind spirit of counsel, the experience-level realm of the 3rd psychic circle
(557.3) 48:7.19 17. Ambition is dangerous until it is fully socialized. You have not truly acquired any virtue until your acts make you worthy of it.
(557.4) 48:7.20 18. Impatience is a spirit poison; anger is like a stone hurled into a hornet’s nest.
(557.5) 48:7.21 19. Anxiety must be abandoned. The disappointments hardest to bear are those which never come.
(557.6) 48:7.22 20. Only a poet can discern poetry in the commonplace prose of routine existence.
– the adjutant mind spirit of worship, the experience-level realm of the 2nd psychic circle
(557.7) 48:7.23 21. The high mission of any art is, by its illusions, to foreshadow a higher universe reality, to crystallize the emotions of time into the thought of eternity.
(557.8) 48:7.24 22. The evolving soul is not made divine by what it does, but by what it strives to do.
(557.9) 48:7.25 23. Death added nothing to the intellectual possession or to the spiritual endowment, but it did add to the experiential status the consciousness of survival.
(557.10) 48:7.26 24. The destiny of eternity is determined moment by moment by the achievements of the day by day living. The acts of today are the destiny of tomorrow.
– the adjutant mind spirit of wisdom, the experience-level realm of the 1st psychic circle
(557.11) 48:7.27 25. Greatness lies not so much in possessing strength as in making a wise and divine use of such strength.
(557.12) 48:7.28 26. Knowledge is possessed only by sharing; it is safeguarded by wisdom and socialized by love.
(557.13) 48:7.29 27. Progress demands development of individuality; mediocrity seeks perpetuation in standardization.
(557.14) 48:7.30 28. The argumentative defense of any proposition is inversely proportional to the truth contained.
May your truest character be far more evidently manifest than the clever words which utter from your mouth. –Tim R Walls
You can know about God and still not know God.
Internalizing the Twenty-eight Principles
I did not understand the deeper and true meanings of these statements, when I first decided to commit them to memory and to…heart… What I did feel and do feel, even now, in the present is the importance of internalizing these principles “these vibrational tones,” these “points of light,” so that they quickly became a “living part” of me.
As “living principles,” “living points of light” within my mind, they ever worked and work their way into the superconscious—growing soul-conscious level of inner psychic growth, the living experiential embrace of the eternal spiritual values of truth, beauty and goodness—lasting integrity, trustworthiness, genuineness, loving compassion, deep intuitive understanding, self-control, self-mastery, wisdom—light and life—true character, as a mortal son of my Paradise Father.
Conceptually, some of these philosophical principles are rather easy to apprehend the meaning, even if you have not yet achieved—seized the actual experience of them in your relationships with others, and your subsequent moral decision-making and soul-growth attainment. The rest must be experienced to know the truth of their living spiritual vibratory adjusting tones; they all simply must be internalized and allow them to take root and grow into your own superconscious—soul-growth understanding and wisdom.
“Many people, especially ignorant people, want to punish you for speaking the truth, for being correct, for being you. Never apologize for being correct, or for being years ahead of your time. If you’re right and you know it, speak your mind. Even if you are a minority of one, the truth is still the truth.” –Gandhi
Why Do I Break the Twenty-eight Principles into Groups of Four?
The first thing that should be obvious is that I am relating the seven adjutant mind spirits to each group of four principles. The second, not so obvious, is that each of the seven adjutant mind spirits, together with each of seven groups of four principles, relate to the experiential psychic soul growth requirements of each of the seven psychic circles.
Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.
The Seven Adjutant Mind Spirits are the “Auxiliary Mind”
The seven adjutant mind spirits of the Local Universe Mother spirit are on loan to us for the duration of the mortal experience. This auxiliary mind “…rests gently upon the electrochemical mechanism below and delicately touches the spirit-morontia energy system above…”
The Local Universe Mother Spirit, through her seven adjutant mind spirits, is constantly pulsing out huge gigantic pulses of mind-spirit-energy into the Local Universe of Nebadon. These mind-energy impulses are everywhere present.
If the human mind is receptive to these seven impulses, they are received into the natural mind-brain matrix as spirit mind tones seeking harmonic unity with the human natural brain-mind matrix, which the natural human mind then feels as impulses to make moral choosing between the lower selfish tendencies of the human animal self and the higher frequencies of unselfish thinking and acting towards the self and others.
All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we shall become. –Buddha
The Seven Psychic Circles of Experiential Soul Growth
Whereas the seven adjutant mind spirits are spirit mind impulses, the seven psychic circles of experiential soul growth are directly related to responding to the leading of the indwelling god-fragment—the Thought Adjuster, which is the pre-personal presence of the Paradise Father within the human individual personality’s natural mind, and the divine partner in the universe ascension career to sometime reach the actual dwelling place of the Gods—the Infinite Spirit, the Eternal Mother-Son, and the Paradise Father on Absolutum—Paradise.
While the requirements of the seven psychic circles of experiential soul-growth cannot be precisely defined, the seven adjutant mind spirits, together with the 7 groups of four principles each, give us a general outline of the experiential requirements for each of the seven psychic circles.
Armed with this conceptual framework, we now have the working tools with which to proceed toward an in depth understanding of the seven adjutant mind spirits, the twenty-eight principles “points of light,” and the seven psychic circles.
In the next article, we will begin to explore deeper and deeper into these higher truths, revelatory of the mortal soul’s path of ascension toward wisdom and eventual fusion with the indwelling Thought Adjuster.
